In the beginning you should buy any SLR camera and play around with it. I would recommend a starter camera like the Nikon D 40, with as a lot of features that come automatically set for you. When people hire a photographer they are paying for the creative vision. The beauty of this camera is that you can start to take off the automatic settings and work on manual, giving you full control of the camera. Taking pictures and doing research about cameras, lens, and lighting will help you understand how to take professional pictures.
Photography is a very competitive field to get into. So if you are thinking about making lots of money you have to have a lot of cliental. Or you can have another job and do photography on your own time. Photography is very expensive so it’s always recommended you have a good source of income. If you want to photograph professionally you'll make less money, having to shoot the unexciting shots in crappy locations for which you're hired. You will be told how to shoot, which is the way the client wants. You'll probably only be able to afford beat up old gear that's "good enough." The goal is to make the best of your situation.
In the end, the best way to start is to just go out there and do your best. All the camera quality is not going t make sense until you understand the importance of capturing and image. And like I stated, that is a talent that you can unlock.
